As many of you may know, my family was hit with a surprise a little over a year ago. At age 23, my brother found himself fighting cancer. Although he is well now, it was an event that changed all of our lives completely.
It’s a helpless feeling, watching someone you love battle the disease, especially someone as young and as strong as he was. So when he found out about the LIVESTRONG Ride, he knew he had to participate. And my husband and I chose to support him by participating too. This June, we will be riding our bikes on a 100 mile journey through Southern California. While we are only committed to raising $500 each person, our team goal is $15,000.
I’ve been asked why I chose to participate in this event. I’m doing this because one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. I’m doing this for my brother, who has become one of those three. I’m doing this because I’m grateful that he is with us today, and that we’re able to ride with him in this event. Mostly, though, I’m doing this because I can.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation was founded to provide practical information and tools for people living with cancer. Their mission is to inspire and empower people affected by cancer through advocacy, public health and research programs.
